[144] This link to William of Wm and Mary Atkey Penington is tenative at best. There is no written documentation. The link is made for my research purpose only. To help me prove or disprove this theory. The only clue I have is the old family chart that points me in this direction.

1790 Census MD Cecil Bohemia Hundred Image 0546 Roll M 637_3
1790 MD Census Cecil Co FWM over 16-- 3, FWM under 16--2, FWF--2, Other--, Slaves-- 5 This would be the correct accounting if Edward was the oldest and listed separately on this census. There is a Edward of Robert listed with one entry FWM over 16. The three over16 in this listing would be Robert the father, Samuel and Hyland, the two under 16 would be Robert (son) and Wm. Benedict. Wife Mary and Mary the daughter are listed.

Oct 12 1801 "Then came Samuel Pennington Executor of the last will and testament of Robert Pennington late of said county deceased." to verify the accounting and if more property was discovered to make an account of it.

Look into two deeds--There is supposed to be a deed in MD of Samuel selling the property that he inherited after his mother's death at the Bohemia River plantation JS Vol. 5-52-1808. Another deed J.S. Vol. 1-118-1805 is supposed to mention Samuel of Robert-Robert of William. This information was in the Pennington files at the Cecil Co Historical Library in Elkton MD

The actual land near Morgans Creek can be viewed from "Club Lane" just off Glebe Rd. There are several horse farms located on the property and by the view it is a spectacular piece of land. Next to Club Lane is a road called "Old Farm Road." At the end of the land is a standing grove of trees that could have sheltered a house long since torn down. It fits the pattern that this could be the site of the old homestead. On the old 1871 map of Cecil CO, there is a Mrs. Pennington homestead located near the "Old Farm Road" area.

Isabel Coburn from Maine in her 4/20/2000 letter. She has done lots of research on the DE and MD branches of this family and has developed some interesting theories.

"The significance of "Robert, of William" appears to be to distinguish Robert who m Mary Beadle/Biddle, s/o Robert who m Mary Ryland, s/o William of Kent Co, from Robert who m. Rachel Beadle, s/o Robert who m Anne Porter, s/o Henry who m1 Rachel, m2 Eliza."

"As you will see, those linkages differ form your Descendants of William Penington -68 and Modified Register. William was the 3rd ch/o William and Mary (Atkey), b say 1718. It was Richard and Mary (Wheeler)'s s. William b 22 Jan 1714/5, according to Peden's 'Early Anglican church records of Cecil County.' For some reason the births of William and Mary (Atkey)'s William, Jacob, Rachel, and Rebecca are not found in St. Stephen's Church records. However, William's will, written 1 Jul 1737, proved 17 Aug 1737, names Richard as oldest (b 22 Jun 1714, John next (b. 8 May 1716), William third (unrecorded).

"The son William m Mary Caulk, identified as sis/o Jacob Caulk. Their chn are named in the adm. accts. of their son William "the younger" who d 1774 before he could complete adm. of his father's estate, who had d. 1769. Their second son, Cornelius, became guardian of three of his younger sibs. Elizabeth, wid/o William "the younger," m2 Thomas Reed.

"I believe it was Robert, s/o Samuel and Jane (Price) who m. Elizabeth Moody. I have been unable to find a marriage for your Samuel's bro. Robert"

Isabel states that this Robert was b in 1718 . The date does not fit!

MD Historical Library in the Norris Harris Church Register Index Has a reference to probably the St Stephens Church records: Robert son of Wm. and Mary father of Hyland Biddle Penington who married Edith Hendrickson 3 p 29 ; another reference is Robert wife Mary son of Wm. father of H B Penington 3 p 158 this may be the bingo connection is this is indeed Wm. and Mary Atkey Penington! Should find the original records

Pearce connection could also be in the sisters of Samuel's wife Hannah MC Conaoughy. The niece was Margaret Handy late Mrs. Margaret Pearce. She testified that she knew Margaret Penington for 15 years in 1825. This would have been around the time of Samuel's second marriage to Hannah in 1810
