Eliza Ann King was a descendant of Peter Little-the founder of Littlestown, PA. For some years after marriage they lived at Creagerstown (Near Walkersville) in Frederick Co MD. There several of their children were born and one lies buried. In 1862, the family moved to the Lewisberry area of Newberry twp in York Co PA about 12 miles south west of Harrisburg.
Shortly after settling there he enlisted at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg or service in the Union Army during the Civil Was serving in Co I, 6th US Cavalry for more than eighteen months. During one engagement with the Rebels he received a disabling wound in the shoulder from a saber that also knocked his off his horse. It was due to this wound that he was later discharged.
He returned to Lewisberry where he continued to live for some years, being variously engaged as a cattle dealer, butcher, and conducting a dairy business. On June 15, 1868, he was appointed the local postmaster and he served in this capacity for about a year and a half.
About 1878 he moved to Harrisburg where he resided for twenty years, working as a dealer in grocery produce and as an inspector for the PA Highway Dept. For many years he was a active Democratic politician, was a member of Post 58 GAR of Harrisburg and was a staunch member of the German Reformed Ch as his father had been.
In 1898 he finally retired from business activities and returned to Lewisberry to live. Retirement was mainly due to ill health resulting from his military service disability, and from which he had suffered for many years. He died at the age of 76, having been highly esteemed all through his life. His name is one of the 34,530 others listed on bronze memorial tablets around the base of the PA State Monument on the Gettysburg battlefield, commemorating every soldier of PA who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg.
