[1344] Asked the researcher at archive some of the 'ins and outs' of proceedings for the orphan court. My confusion was on why Lavinia Penington's needed a guardian appointed by the court. Her mother Eliza S Penington was still alive and provided for in the Samuel Penington 200/year ruling. The marriage laws back then were such: if a widow remarried the money and property she inherited automatically became property of the new husband. The orphan court appointed a guardian to make sure the money/property that the children inherited did not get dissolve in the new marriage.
