[272]
Born near Uniontown, Carrol Co MD, he continued to live there for some years after marriage. In the early 1840's, he moved to Bachman's Valley near to his brother Daniel Stonesifer. Then in 1876 he moved to the Bart's Church area in Adams Co PA where he had an acre of land, kept a cow, raised hogs, and in 1882 paid a county tax of 95 cents.
He was a farmer, shoemaker, teacher, and a member of the Lutheran Church. While living in the Bachman Valley area he was a member of the Jerusalem Lutheran and Reformed Church there, and also served a term or so as a justice of the peace.
His wife Lydia was a nearly helpless invalid the last few years of her life. She was the daughter of John Henry and Barbara Routson. Barbara being the daughter of Barbara Stonesifer who was a daughter of our immigrant John Daniel Stonesifer.
Joseph and Lydia had 15 children and their descendants are probably the most numerous family branches from all of John Daniel Stonesifer's 14 children. They are buried in the new cemetery of St Mary's Church at Silver Run- their tombstones being the first 2 markers to the left just inside the main entrance. Although badly warn by time the following epitaphs for them can still be deciphered:
For Joseph:
"Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life. Rev 2:10 Asleep in Jesus"
For Lydia:
"Jesus said unto her: I am the resurrection and the life, he that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live. John 11:25 Farewell mother till we meet again."
