                                                         (1765 - 1835)

[11509] Born near Uniontown like his parents, he received his early education in Carroll Co and then came to Littlestown for more advanced studies at Le Fevre's Academy there. Throughout his life, he had a thirst for knowledge, and constantly sought to teach himself to become more proficient in various subjects - among these being etymology, philology, science of the day, history, and languages. It is said he even tried to master enough Greek so that he could read parts of the New Testament in that language.

In his early years, he had worked as a tanner and shoemaker. However, most of his life was spent farming and teaching for some 31 years in the public schools of both Maryland and Penna. Although much of his life was spent on a small farm about three miles north of the MD- PA state line below Hanover, he usually walked back and forth to his schools each day from his home when they were in session. The schools he taught at were mainly in nearby MD- two of them being Mud College and Bish's. In Scharf's "History of Western MD" it states that in 1881-82 he was teaching in Myers District of Carroll Co at Bish's School where he had 40 pupils. If weather was bad, he would either stay at the school or at a home nearby. Each Christmas he would take a wagon to his school in which he carried candy to give to the pupils. Many a time he would walk to Westminster from the school of his home for his pay.

After marriage, he and his wife first lived in rented homes. In 1860, he purchased a property consisting of two lots with a house and other building along the Hanover - Littlestown highway in Pennville from a cousin, Zephaniah Bankert. After living there for some years, he purchased the farm referred to previously, and which was composed of 19 acres of cleared land and 4 acres of woodland. It was located in West Manheim twp. about three miles north of the state line and about two or so miles west of Pleasant Hill. Here he lived the rest of his life. In his last years the property was acquired by his son in law and daughter Edwin C and Amelia "Kate" Bortner, and Jacob and Elizabeth lived with them.

He was a very pious and religious man, and was a member of St Bartholomew's Lutheran and Reformed Church several miles south west of Hanover and just a few miles west from where he lived. Although founded in 1844, the formal papers of incorporation for this church were made much later on Aug 10, 1901. Two of the six men who witnessed the signing of these papers were Jacob H and his son in law Edwin C Bortner. Jacob H was one of the first four men named as trustees for the 1st year of the church's incorporation. Frequently he also attended services at his wife's church, Mt Zion United Brethren Church, which was located about a mile east of St Bartholomew's Church.

He liked cats, was a "hard" Republican, was musically inclined, and owned a melodeon, which he loved to play, and served as a Justice of the Peace in West Manheim twp for many years. Jacob H had also served for a time in the Union Army during the Civil War, but the unit is not known. He was released from the service so that he could return to continue teaching school. As he grew older he acquired a beard and this beard plus his facial features often brought comment about his having a good resemblance to Abraham Lincoln. He thought highly of Lincoln, probably enjoyed being said to favor him in facial features and like Lincoln, although being humble and religious, he was not afraid to stand up to anyone on matters of right or wrong.

He apparently was quite outspoken on the various issues of the day. In the Hanover Herald for Saturday, May 2, 1896 it was mentioned that Jacob H Stonesifer, 'Squire and ex-school teacher of West Maneim, was overheard on Tuesday night at one of our school-houses, giving a lecture on the compulsory education law. " This was likely a gathering of some persons working together on some project, and during the course of the evening a heated and lively discussion of the new law ensued.

Jacob H and Elizabeth Wentz Stonesifer raised a family of eight children six daughter and two sons. After a long and interesting life, Elizabeth died at the age of 84. Jacob is said to have grieved deeply over her passing away and never recovered from it. In less than three months he died also age 86.
