They farmed at Pine Grove, a few miles southeast of Littlestown, and were the parents of 12 children 6 sons and 6 daughters. She was one of the outstanding spellers of her community in the old fashioned "spelling bee" of that day, could give excellent imitations of bird and animal calls, and would impersonate various human voices. Emma also had a very fine singing voice, and she was quite skilled on the melodion or parlor organ - even being able to reproduce a band selection after having heard it played at a public event.
Their six sons were also quite talented musically. They played a variety of instruments, and for many years were known for their Gobrecht Band and orchestra. Their sister, Emma , often was a vocalist for them. They were also leading participants in the Carroll County Reed Band, the Knights of Pithias Band, and numerous other area musical groups.
Besides farming, John helped to build a reservior near Sell's Station for the Hanover Water Co., helped to build and then maintain the Long Arm Telephone Line - the first such facility in the immediate area, was a supervisor and caretaker of the roads of Union Twp. for 30 years, and was superintendent of the Pine Grove Sunday School for many years where he also taught a class of young boys. However, the family apparently were members of Christ Church, at least in earlier years, as the Gobrecht children were baptized ther by the pastor Rev FS Lindaman. After Emma's death from typhoid fever, he remarried.
