Genelogy prepared in 1930 " Sir John Stewart sailed on ship Conaunt from Edinburg Scotland by way of West Indies landing in NY or New Amsterdan 1669. His father Sir James of Sterling Sct married 1703 Jemina DeMorest dau of an officer in the British Army." [this appears to be conflicting information in the final versions perpared by Mary K Stewart.]

"John Stuart eldest son of Sir John was in the British Army when Louisburg was besieged. When the English Army retired to Europe, he remained in N. Jersey and married Jemina Demorest. Being supposed dead by his family after his father's death, James heired the estate, which was large and the title. John settled in Hackensack thence removed to Del. and died bequeathing his Scottish rights to his children by will."

Steward Clan magazine 12/1945:
"sailed from Edinburgh on the ship Unicorn in the year 1698 for the West Indies to settle (So stated in the marriage record in the Dutch Reformed church at Hackensack, NJ). The ship was accompanied by the Caledonia. It is probable that John was of the Stewards of Minto, in Dumfriesshire, =C:61, and that he went on the ill starred expedition to Darien, =B:113. In the month of August, 1699, Stewart reached New York, and some weeks later he went to Hackensack, NJ. There he married on Mar 29 1700, Jacquemine DeMarets, daughter of John DeMorets. She was generally called Jemima. In October, 1703, the family removed to Appoquinimink creek in St Georges's hundred, New Castle county, Del. John's name is not found in the deed record, but books D and F are lost. John Greewater of St Georges's hundred, in his will dated April 7, 1721 and probated Feb 19, 1721-2 named his wife Elizabeth and his friend John Stewart as executors: the witnesses to the will were Daniel Corbit, William Marrow and Jann Stewart. John made a will, said to have been dated Feb 19 1723-4 but the record of it is lost, =D:180. He named his wife Jemima as one of the executors and evidently bequeathed to his son James his property in Scotland. The widow Jemima married Richard Watkinson, esq. Watkinson "by right of his wife Jamima Watkinson, formerly Stewart, the only acting executrix of her late husband John Stewart, late of St George's hundred, fuller, deceased," produced at the May court, 1733 and account dated Oct 17, 1732 of the administration Daniel Corbitt and Francis Taylor were paid for appraising the estate. Stewart had two children who were baptized in the Dutch Reformed church of Hackensack, and other after removing to Delaware. The names of the others, without reference to the first two appear on a family chart drawn some years ago by Mrs. David Stewart IV of Camden NJ.,--C:24."

Small manuscripts Stewart / Port Penn Original affidavits to claim inheritance in Scotland.

"John Stewart came from Scotland about the year 1700 to New York being then seized of an estate in Scotland as heir to his father. He married at Hackensack and had David Stewart his eldest son and four other children of the said marriage. 19th February 1723 John Stewart made his will in writing and thereby devised the estate in Scotland --and died.
In this case it will be necessary to prove that the testator came form a certain place in Scotland, in such a ship at such a time, and in such company. That he was reputed to be the son of such parents in Scotland and that he declared himself to be so. That he married his wife at a certain time and had such issue as aforesaid. That he made his will; a copy whereof or rather the original must be sent to Scotland proved and certified under the great seal of the government. And the depositions must be sent certified in the same manner

There are two bills in the same file received and signed by John Stewart dated 10 Sept 1722, and 5 Sept 1722. He had a very handsome signature. Looks like very old English manuscript initials.
