To My Children 2/10/82
I am writing to tell you about your family which preceded your existence and how, as I remember, it all happened.
Your father already has information regarding his geneology which is in name and date form and which you have seen. If I relate more about some of them it is because they too belonged in my lifespan and enlarged yours. Otherwise I would anticipate that this reporting would be mainly concerned with the Sandbergs and Swansons who were the immediate cause of my opportunity to be part of human life on the planet Earth.
In second grade, the teacher, Ann Sweeney, asked us to find out what our parents' education and religion was so that she could fill out some papers there on her desk. I saw my Papa Saturday morning and told him what I was required to know and pass on to Miss Ann. First I asked, "What religion are we Papa?"" He twinkled and kept an unsmiling face and answered very pleasantly, "Yust tell your teacher, Elsa, your fat'er is a free t'inker!" Not knowing what religion was, his answer suited me fine. I had no questions.
The education query however seemed to interest him more. He had much more to say but seeing the look of incomprehension on my face, he finally said, "Yust say University of Stockholm." In later years I am to the conclusion that he was saying Uppsala but with Swedish accent and so fast, I could not catch it. Stockholm, however, was in my vocabulary. Other stories he told me earlier and later than this incident placed the family in the province of Sköna and near, in a very rural sense, to Stockholm, the capitol of Sweden and Uppsala, which has the university nearby.
