[491] Learned the blacksmith's trade at Mayberry, then went to Westminster area and worked in the sawing and grinding mill that his brother, Augustus H., was operating there at that time. During the Civil War he went to Lancaster Co. to work, and in doing so, had missed out in being called into military service. Later he returned to Mayberry and worked in a mill there which was being operated by an uncle William L. Stonesifer.

At age 35 he married and moved to Littlestown where he worked as a cooper, a trade he had learned when he was young under the sponsorship of John Henry Hoppe, the brother of his mother. Squire Hoppe, as he was known, lived near Westminster, and was a well known justice of the peace. The last several years of Abraham's life he was blind. On the day he died, he was suddenly stricken with a heart attact, but was able to seat himself in a chair where he expired before help could reach him.
