[5645] Paper of unknown author, Historical Society Library, Wilmington, DE. Craven Family File:

"Thomas Craven, a schoolmaster who had emigrated from London in 1728, and his wife Elizabeth Walling." John Craven is the third of eight children of Thomas and Elizabeth.

Three Craven Family Records. Contributed by Lewis D Cook Member of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey:

"Thomas Craven (1709-1776 of London, England, and Middletown, Burlington, and Ringoes, New Jersey"

"The original Holograph memorandum of Thomas Craven, immigrant ancestor of this family, dated 15 June 1773, is written on two sheets, with continuation of the reverse of each by his son Dr. Gershom Craven, of Ringoes. It was presented to the Princeton Historical Society in November, 1941, by a descendant, Mrs. W. G. Lawrence, of New York City. A photostatic copy shows the manuscript clearly legible as now published. Words missing in the frayed edges, inclosed here in square brackets, have been supplied from a transcript made in 1844-48 by Rev. Elijah R. Craven of Princeton Theological Seminary, endorsed with his statement that it was a copy of the original then in possession of Ann E (Craven) Tingey, of Lambertville, NJ. The transcript was in the hands of his son, Rev Charles E Craven of Upper Montclair, when copied by the contributor in 1931."

"Thomas Craven, the Son of Thomas Craven and Anna Craven his Wife born in the City of London , on Sunday about Sun rise November 20th Anno. Christi [1709], and came tin Pennsylvania 26 of October 1728."

Footnote #3: "Apparently, the progenitor Thomas Craven lived in the home of his son Dr. Gershom Craven in the village of Ringoes, East Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co, NJ at the time of his death, and this reference is to the now abandoned St. Andrew's (Episcopal) Churchyard in the northern end of Ringoes. The only Craven gravestones found there by the contributor in 1928 were those of Dr. Gershom Craven, his wife Rebecca and Children John, Elizabeth, and Titus."

Footnote #2:"Advertisement in the 'Pennsylvania Gazette', Philadelphia, 8 Dec. 1748 'Writing, arithmetic, vulgar and decimal, merchants accompts, by the Italian method, double entry, sundry branches of the mathematics, as navigation, surveying, etc. and algebra, all carefully taught in Burlington, near the Court-house by Thomas Craven."

MacKenszie "Colonial Families": "Thomas Craven who came to America and settled in Monmouth County County , New Jersey, in the early part of the eighteeth century was born in London Enbland died at Amwel,l New Jersey; was a man of superior education and probably educated at Oxford; was one of the first Professors at Princeton College."
