[597] A native of Carroll Co., he had been well known there in his youth as an athlete. He lived at 1655 North Fulton Ave. in Baltimore where he was arrested in July of 1912 on the charge of misconducting himself with young girls who visited his office. An investigation at the time reported to indicate that there were as many as 60 cases which could be brought against him. Although his lawyer and many other people, some being quite prominent, said that he was conpletely innocent, a jury convicted him on the charge of assulting Matilda Scott. He was sentenced in May of 1913 to serve a 2 year term in Baltimore's House of Corrections where he died on a Saturday from Bright's Disease.

Notes of Walter Ryland:
Of course I would like very much to connect up both John Ryland + Mary Pennington. I wonder if this might not be Mary Penington b 16 Apr 1754. This Mary was the daughter of John Penington 1721 and Rachel Biddle. I have this entry from Clark, A. Howard, National Register of the Society Sons of
the American Revolution, New York, NY: Louis H. Cornish, 1902.>*CHARLES ALFRED ELY KING, deceased (9656). Son of James Hammer and Charlotte Rose (Ely) King; grandson of George Wilson and Mary Ann (Gormley) King; great-grandson of William and Charlotte (Ryland) King; great2-grandson of
John and Mary (Pennington) Ryland; great3-grandson of John Pennington, private, Colonel Price's Second Maryland Continental Foot, died in service.<
Mrs. Dening's entry in the DAR Lineage Book gives us John Ryland who married Mary Pennington . . . the daughter of John Pennington and Mary Ryland. No wonder I get confused. It is her entry that gives us 1735-1778 for John Pennington the Revolutionary soldier. I haven't been able to verify that anywhere else. She lists John Penington in what appears to be the same unit, so at least these are consistent.
You've seen her listing, but here it is again.>The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 52 page 118

If he were born in early 1727, he would have been around 69 when he died. 12 children and some of them referred to, as 'young children' in his will. Hannah lived about 35 years after her husband's death, it is reasonable to surmise that this may have been a second marriage and the younger children are of this union and the older from another. However, the Orphan Court documents indicate that the 12 children are Hannah's, not Elizabeth Brown his first wife.
1760/May 14 Q 1 58 Obadiah Voshall wife Elizabeth to Daniel Robinson. John Brown Decd. father of the afsd. Elizabeth "The Downs." This is the first mention of OB JR in the deeds. He conducts selling land. The last time Elizabeth is named in a deed is Nov 1 1773. The first time Hannah Voshell appears in the deed records is 1786. 1786/Nov 18 Owen and Penelope Irons grant land to Hannah Voshell 10 a near her sister Penelope Smiths land.
From 1760-1773, there are thirteen years for Obediah JR and Elizabeth to produce offspring.
Hannah could have had from 1774-1796 (22 year span) to produce 12 children as the Orphan Court file states. If Hannah was 20 when she married in 1774, she would have been 76 at the time of her probate.
Obadiah's Probate will, April 21 1796 [fatefully copied to the spelling style of the period and interpretations of handwriting] Probated May 9, 1796
"I give and bequeath to Hannah my beloved wife whom I likewise constitute make and ordain together with my son Titus my Sole Executors of this MY last will and Testament, to her I give and bequeath all and Singular my lands messuages and tenaments, goods & chattels debts, due and demands and all real & personal Estate whatsoever during her widowhood or as long as she lives single. Excepting one good feather bed and furniture that is to say bed bedstead two sheets one blanket coverlet to my Daughter Nancy and at or after the decease of my wife Hannah five acres of land to be added to his Equal Share of my landed Estate to my youngest Son Owen and five shillings to my Son James. I leave all my young Children that are under age to the care of wife Hannah and my son Titus the sole executors, who are to support and take care of them until they become of age. Should my wife Hannah not live or remain single so long, my son Titus to hold and have all the lands messuages and Tenaments to as above written until the youngest of the Children shall have arrive at the age of twenty one and then an Equal division of all my real and personal Estate amongst all my children Except my son James. ( my Just debts funeral first of all to be paid) to them and their heirs forever- and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke & disamale all & every other former testaments wills & Legacies bequests & Executors by me in any ways before this time. Named willed & bequeathed, rattyfieing & confirming this and no other to be my last will & Testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto let my hand and seal the day and year above written. Inter lineation made befor signing of this my last willed Testament" Obadiah [his mark] Voshall "Signed Sealed published pronounced and declased by the said Obadiah Voshal as his last will and Testament in the presence of us,
Mary Bell
Isaac Kent
Benoni Harris
In addition to this my last will and Testament be it remember that my son Daniel is to continue with his mother and brother Titus and to assist in supporting the children until they become of age and if he refuses to comply with this condition he is to have five shillings only in like manner as my son James." Signed Obadiah Voshall Witness by Mary Bell, Isaac Kent, and Benoni Harris.
[It may be conjectured that Obadiah had made a will before this last one. He was probably ill at the time of this document since the document is entered into probate less than one month after Obadiah signs it. He may have had some second thoughts when it came to time of his final illness. His son James must not have been a favorite at the time of his last illness.]
Scharf-- History of Delaware has a foot note Miss Charlotte Voshell supplied some of the information on the Thomas Chapel. It states that she is the great granddaughter of Penelope Freeman. Questions on where she fits into the line. She is listed in the Daniel line that Robert Voshell supplied. This Daniel is also featured in the biographical sketch of John Wesley Voshell. That states there was a Daniel that comes from France with two brothers and he has a son Daniel. This would but one too many generations between Charlotte and the claim of Great Granddaughter of Penelope Freeman. The Delaney branch owned property right next to Obadiah. In addition, there are further land transfers from Hannah to this Daniel.
DAR Records for Vol. p 207 "John Voshell d 3/7/1817" this seems to fit the Probate record for OB JR brother James.
