Notes of Walter Ryland:
1. One of the things that I have been trying to solve is the apparent gap in the children of John Ryland, Jr., and Rebecca. One -- Mary Ann --supposedly born in 1753, the year after the death of Rebecca in 1752.
The only explanation that occurs to me is that there were three generations of John Ryland in a row. John 1672 would be known as John Senior and his son as John Junior. But after the death of John 1672, John 1699 would be the "senior" one and John 1724 the "junior" one. They did not use "senior" and "junior" the same way we do today. The appellation "junior" did not last for life in those days but only as long as there was an older one around to be "senior." Thus I think Mary Ann must have been the daughter of John 1699, not John 1672.
