CC Historical Library Elkton MD History of a Ford Family in Cecil County Maryland Compiled by Blanche Ford Bowlsbey and Joyce Brown Layman
Captain John Ford (Captain John Ford, Lineage: Sir Charles 1, Richard 2, Charles 3), second son of Charles and Cornelia Stoops Ford was born June 1752 near Back Neck at Bohemia Manor, Cecil Co., MD. As a youth, he joined the Maryland Militia and was a member of the "Maryland Line." At Harmony Hall in Cecil Co., MD in 1770 at the age of 18, he was married to the 16-year-old daughter of Col. John and Martha Tilden Hyland. Millicent Tilden Hyland was born at Harmony Hall on 12 Feb 1754. This marriage cemented the relation ship between two of the oldest and most distinguished families of MD as the Hylands trace their ancestry back to Charlemagne.
John and Millicent settled across the river at Oldfields Point where they became the parents of ten children six boys and four girls.
John continued his activities with the Militia. His military record has been well documented, and "to the memory of 'Captain Jack' has clung much tradition, and it is not unusual to read some anecdotes about him. His outlook over the Elk River and the Chesapeake Bay, so broad and endless found expression in the kind and reverent attitudes in his life." John and Millicent were gracious hosts and entertained many important people in their home, including General Lafayette, the Officers of the French Fleet and important American leaders who often visited for long periods of time.
Bishop Asbury, the early Evangel of Methodism in America, was a frequent visitor at the Ford home. In his journal in 1781, he wrote, "From Court House Point I crossed the Elk River to Brother Ford's where I had a most hospitable welcome and held services. I am sure this family entertains largely in their home; even while we were there, they had guests every day who remained two or three days - distances would not allow shorter visits, nor would their hosts allow of shorter ones. John Ford has a large tract of land form which he obtains all his family's needs, even luxuries. The schooner sail once a month to Baltimoretown for goods, grocery supplies, and clothes not obtainable elsewhere."
Responding as many others to the strong appeal of the Bishop, Captain Ford became a devout member of the Society of Methodists, giving both money and land for the building of Chapels in Cecil Co. As one of the Founding Trustees, on 25 Oct 1794 he accepted from Jacob Jones a deed of one acre on ground, which is now the oldest part of the Methodist Cemetery in North East, MD. Capt. Ford was a frequent visitor to North East as he purchased and operated a tannery there. One report says that after his death, the marble slab which he used to dry the skins was removed and used for his gravestone. He became interested in framing and bought land form Jacob Jones in the vicinity of North East a small part of which is still owned by his descendants. He still owned 'part of Bohemia Manor, which lay across the Elk River, not far from Harmony Hall, the ancestral home of the Hylands, which he had inherited form his father, Charles."
While he was involved in fighting for the Cause of Independence, the British, under General Howe, landed at Oldfields Point and seized his property. An inventory of his loss included: 3 horses, 4 cows, 38 sheep, 13 large hogs, 36 geese, 100 bushels of corn, 8 bushels of herring, 1 dozen shad, and a pound of salt. The Ford house was used as Headquarters of the Hessians under General Knyphausen after the landing on 25 and 26 Aug 1777. It was partially destroyed during and after the Invasion. In March 1778, John Ford signed the Oath of Allegiance in Cecil Co., MD and on 21 April 1778 he was commissioned Captain of Militia, 13th Battalion of Cecil Co., MD. (MD Archives, Vol. 21 page 47: Vol. 12 pages 360-415) Captain John Ford fought in the Battles of Long Island, Germantown, Monmouth, King's Mountain, Gilford Courthouse, and Camden, SC. He was taken prisoner at Camden on 16 Aug 1780.
Millicent died 24 Sept 1805 and was buried in the family burial plot. At Cecil Co MD on 8 Dec 1808 John married Catherine Hedricks who lived only a short time. On 28 May 1812 in Cecil Co he was married a third time to Mary Wilson who was born in 1778 and who survived him. John died at Oldfields Point on 10 Oct 1824 and was buried there beside Millicent. After the death of John, Oldfields Point passed out of the Ford family. Mary Wilson Ford died on 11 Feb 1847 and is buried with the Wilson family in Harts Methodist Chapel Cemetery in Cecil Co MD.
A Hessian musket and a British musket kept by Captain John Ford as a memento of the burning of his hone at Oldfields Point at the time of the British invasion in Aus 1777 have been preserved. These weapons were in the possession of Captain Ford's great-great grandson, John Ford of Washington, DE as well as a service sword used by his uncle, Cat Samuel Ford 1832-1900, at the Battle of Antietam in the Civil Was. This sword presented to the Cecil Co Historical Society by John Ford on Oct 25 1961 is now housed in the society's museum located in the library building in Elkton MD.

They moved to Columbiana Co Ohio just prior to the Civil War where he worked as a shoemaker. He enlisted in the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War and attained the rank of Lieutenant. His death apparently was service related - and he is buried in Ohio. They had three known children, and after his death Rebecca returned to the Silver Run area with them, living the rest of her days at Union Mills.
Thomas and Rebecca as they were known were cousins.
