Paper of unknown author, Historical Society Library, Wilmington, DE. Craven Family File:
"John Craven died in Washington, DC to which city he had removed with the Federal Government from Philadelphia in 1800, a clerk for many years in the offices of the Accountant of the U.S. Navy and of the U.S. Treasury. Burial was made in Washington, and his remains, with those of his second wife, were re-interred in the Congressional Cemetery there by his grandson, the Rev. Elijah R. Craven D. D. in 1863. Another descendant, Mrs. Marguerite G. Cooper, of Houston, Delaware, arranged to have his grave marked with the regulation Military Veteran's bronze plate in 1964. John Craven had settled in the village of Port Penn, in St. Georges Hundred, New Castle County, Del., by 1766, about which year he first married Ann Stewart, who was born there August 4, 1738, daughter of David and Ann (Adams) Stewart. In 1774 he was named one of the three Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church in St Georges Hundreds ("Old Drawyers Church") but on August 1, 1785, he was received by the Second Presbyterian Church Philadelphia, by letter of transfer for St. Georges Church, Delaware. And, on November 6, 1787, he took the oath of allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania, being then listed as a clerk. Previously, in May 1776, he had served as Acting Quartermaster, on duty at Port Penn, Delaware, and on August 3, 1785 his bill for 34 Pounds for that service was noted in the State Auditor's Journal. John Craven's military service record had now been recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution, in admitting descendants to membership in that patriotic society. Among the patriot John Craven's descendants may be named: Elijan Richardson Craven, MD 1796-1823, who graduated from Princeton in 1815, took his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1819, and was professor of Botany in Columbia College, Washington, D. C. at the time of his sudden death. His only child was Rev. Elijah Richardson Craven, D. D., 1824-1908 of Philadelphia, who was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1885. Another grandson of the "Patriot" John Craven was David Stewart Craven, 1802-1862, who was Captain of the steamboat "Reybold" on the Delaware River, plying between Salem, NJ and Philadelphia. Upon his retirement, he resided near the village of St. Georges, in Red Lion Hundred, New Castle County, Del. One of his sons was Thomas Jenkins Craven, 1837-1922, who graduated from Delaware College in 1858 and was the president of the Salem Glass Works at the time of his death in Salem. His son David Stewart Craven, 1873-1949, was the State Senator from Salem County, NJ 1935-1938; and his (Thomas J Craven's) daughter, Mrs. John Dale Dilworth and Mrs. John Percy Nields, reside in Princeton, NJ, and in Wilmington, Del., respectively. Mrs. Cooper, a great-great-great-granddaughter of John Craven is a retired Western Union employee and a member of Capt. Jonathan Caldwell chapter, D. A. R. She and her niece Mrs. W Charles Paradee, Sr. of Dover, Delaware are interested in restoring the graves of their ancestors. Her two sons, Julius H. Cooper, Jr. a Tax Consultant and Accountant, of Delmar, MD and Lt. Col. Randolph Graham Cooper, US Army Signal Corps, MC Lean, VA, stationed at the Pentagon are graduates of the University of Delaware.
