He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and it is believed that he was either killed or died in the service as he never returned. A cavalryman, he had two horses shot from under him.
He may be the Josiah Stonesifer who is mentioned in the"History of Lancaster Co.,PA" by Franklin Ellis and Samuel Evans in 1883. They state that a Josiah Stonesifer enlisted April 19 1864 in the Union Army there and served in Co H 79th Regiment as a private, died near NY on May 3, 1865 and was buried in Cypress Hill Cem Long Island. Although this Josiah was an army private, it may be our Josiah who, perhaps unable to contiune in the cavalry for some reason, was able to contiune to serve his country in the infantry.
