Middletown Transcript Obituary 7/13/1872:
This community and in fact the whole State, will be pained to hear of the death of Captain Samuel Jefferson, who died at his residence near Port Penn, about 4 o'clock on Monday afternoon. Last week, Mr. Jefferson, whilst on a visit to Philadelphia, fell through a hatch-way in a warehouse and injured himself severely. He was brought home on Saturday and died form his injuries on Monday.
Mr. Jefferson was in his 75th year and has been a consistent and life-long Democrat. He enjoyed the confidence of that party, and had been its candidate for several important positions. In 1862, he was its candidate for Governor. Mr. Jefferson was consequently well know throughout the State, and his loss will be mourned not only by his large family of relations, but by his many admirers thought out the Commonwealth
