From the book "Delaware -Past and Present: Rynear W. Slaughter -Builders through-out that section of Delaware of which Clayton is a prosperous center have long demonstrated to their complete satisfaction the substantial value to their interests of the retail and wholesale building materials plant of which Rynear W. Slaughter is the head. Mr. Slaughter is a lumber merchant who knows his business throughout its many branches, and having established himself upon the basis of probity and of mutual cooperation with his public, has added both to local industry and to his own mercantile repute.
Rynear W. Slaughter was born 5/15.1886 in Kent Co, son of Ezekiel Slaughter, a farmer, and Mary L. (Ford) Slaughter. Here he received his early education in the public schools, and for some time engaged in farming with his father. His first business venture on his own account was in 1913, when Mr. Slaughter entered upon the meat business in Clayton, in which he continued until 1920. It was then that he turned his attention to the lumber business, in which he has made an outstanding success as a merchant, engaging in the retail and wholesale of building material, employing eight men on average.
Mr. Slaughter's political preferences are those of the Independent voter; and he is a member of the board of directors of the Clayton Bank, and of the Clayton Building and Loan Association. His religious affiliation is with St Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church.
"The First State" (written abt 1946-47): "Rynear Williams Slaughter- the interesting and constructive career of Rynear has been long and actively associated with Kent Co DE. He was born here on May 15, 1886 son of Ezekiel and Mary Lydia (Ford) Slaughter, both natives of this same section of the State. The father is deceased, but the mother is living at the age of 92 years.
Rynear was educated in the grade and high schools of Smyrna, and engaged in farming until he was 24 yrs. His belief in the possibilities and opportunities of his native State was the dominating influence that kept him interested in agriculture. As with many men, his progress in business was not direct, for he had tried his hand at a number of enterprises and with success. In 1913, he inaugurated a wholesale and retail meat business in neighboring Clayton DE. This he operated under his own name until 1920, when he started, again under his own name, in the lumber trade, with which he has been identified to the present writing. He also is engaged in a wholesale oil business, and directs the business of a retail hardware firm with stores in Clayton and lumberyards in Clayton and Smyrna. Likewise, he is a wholesaler in grains, feeds, and kindred materials, employing in his numerous enterprises a large number of people and contributing importantly to the wealth and welfare of communities.
Mr. Slaughter is a prominent realtor of Clayton - Smyrna and other towns; is a director of the National Bank of Smyrna; and is the owner and operator of the Safety Transit Co. of Clayton, that utilizes some 15 busses in its business. To the public affairs of his town, Mr. Slaughter had given much of his time and energies. He is an influential figure in the Smyrna Rotary Club, of which he is a former president; member of the Wilmington, Smyrna, and Clayton Chambers of Commerce; the Dover Country Club; a member of the board of directors of the Kent General Hospital; had been a president of the Anti-Saloon League of DE, and is religiously affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, where he has served for 15 years as superintendent of the Sunday school and member for 25 years of the official board for Clayton and Kenton for all War Loan drives during WWII and is member of the Middle Atlantic Lumbermen's Association and also the Tri-State Lumbermen's Association."
Uncle Rynear's daughter Clara Nancy married a Peterson She lived up in
the New England area like maybe Conn or Vermont. She I think had a
couple of children She died sometime in 1972 Uncle Matt I recall was
married to a Carrie. She was s stitch. after Uncle Matts death she would
go to Fla and come back and tell "Little Gramma" (Mary Emma) and "Big
Grandma" (Mary Lydia) about these sayonces that she would go to and the
things they would tell her. She always was a bit heavy and wore lots of
perfume. I would just sit and listen to her talk with great fascination.
I think they had a son. I m not sure if she was a second marriage or
whatand whether the son was a product of both of them. Being so far fr
all the sources of Delaware records and since I am just beginning to get
into this I appreciate so much what I have garnered fr your site. Mary
