[759] He was killed at LeFever's Station RR crossing near Christ Church (just east of Littlestown) when the Atlantic Refining gas and oil truck he was driving was struck head-on by a PA RR passenger train. It was said that he was hard of hearing, and probably did not know the train was approaching.

They recorded his age as 44; however, he was actually 50 when he took his bride of 30 years. He was 52 when his only daughter was born. It also stated his occupation as farmer and residence Smyrna, DE. No names of his parents; however, his parent's birthplace was DE. His death certificate stated cause of death heart failure and diabetes, lived 87yrs 11mo 30days.
His granddaughter Ruth V. memories of him are very few since he died when Ruth V was 5. Some memories are of Ruth V twirling in front of the mirror as he shelled peanuts for her. Ruth V thought the brown skin was bitter, but his fingers were not nimble enough to flake it off. He always tried to grab the cherry decorations off a particular dress while she skillfully evaded. He sat in his garden on a barrel with a square top to it and a rope coming out of the center of the square. One of his granddaughter's favorite plants in his garden was a bleeding heart perennial. Ruth V always makes sure to one of those in her garden.
A picture of the young Eugene and Idella is in the family album of Leslie Walls. It is most likely their wedding day. Eugene appears to be laughing at something and Idella is not smiling.
