Hi Ruth,
I hope this email finds you well. I owe you an update on Charles Alfred Bryan who married Ruth
Ann Voshell in 1871. According to Talbot County, Maryland marriage licenses, 1850-1875
authored by R. Bernice Leonard, Charles Alfred Bryan married Ruth Ann Voshell 24 Jan 1871. I
have a copy of the MSA microfilm which should include that marriage and I cannot find it on the
microfilm. However, since the union is mentioned by Ms. Leonard in the book as well as your
family sources, it cannot be in doubt. It's probably more a reflection on my research
capabilities, alas. I did find Charles' second union, however. On 18 Oct 1877 he married
Martha Patten in Talbot County (near Easton, Methodist minister) and this is the spouse he is
with in the 1880 census (living with his widowed sister Ann J Palmer):

His sister Ann J Bryan is also found in the Talbot Co MD marriage records. She married Isaac
Palmer 12 Feb 1867.
Now here is the queer part. He signed a marriage bond in Wilmington Delaware 23 Nov 1881 to
marry Mary Wesley Stack. So his second wife Martha may have died between May of 1880 and Nov
of 1881. Alternatively, he may have divorced her or just been a bigamist. I am certain it is
the same person. One of the more important documents I obtained was the birth certificate for
Ruth V Bryan, born to Charles Alfred Bryan and Mary Wesley Stack. On it the parents are listed
as Chas A Bryan of Caroline Co MD, and Mary Stack of East New Market MD. So this is the link I
was looking for to link my Wilmington DE ancestor to the Charles A Bryan born to Robert Bryan
in Caroline Co MD who I suspected of being the same person. Unfortunately, I still don't know
Ruth V Bryan's middle name. Neither her birth certificate nor her SS application had it. I'm
going to try to get a death certificate from the state of NJ, where she died, to see if her
middle name is listed there.
It's late and I may not have been completely coherent, so please respond with any need for
clarification.
