[1469] 1887, Oct 5 Smyrna Times:" The town of Kenton was quite stirred on Monday morning by the starling announcement that one of its citizens had cut his throat and was then in a dying condition. The person was John W Minner, who had been bartender for some time at the hotel of Terrence Carvin, and the scene of his bloody deed his own bed chamber. He had retired to bed about ten o'clock the night before with the same demeanor as usual, which was always a pleasant one, the family having no reason to suspect that any thing was disturbing his mind. Usually an early riser before the rest of the household, it was found at breakfast time that he still had not come from his room. On going thither to see if he was sick, the opened door presented a shocking sight--blood everywhere," [description of the room follows]. "He had cut two gashes across his throat with a razor, not severing the windpipe, but nicking the jugular vein, sometime between ten and seven, the doctor thinks about four o'clock. In this condition, he walked about the room a part of the time at least, as he was found with his slippers on, his lifeblood slowly but surely running out and his strength nearly exhausted from loss of blood when discovered. Dr Wm. H Cooper was quickly summoned to the spot, but too late; there was not blood and vitality enough left to work on. He sewed up the wound, and could have saved his life, he feels assure if had he seen him before his body had become so fully exhausted of blood. He was becoming unconscious, but revived sufficiently after the dressing of the wound and a draught of water to answer the Doctor's question, then relapsed into unconsciousness, and expired a little after eight o'clock. The Doctor asked him who had done the bloody deed; he replied that he did it himself. "What did you do it with" was next asked, and the reply was, "a razor" The instrument employed in the fatal deed had not up to this time been discovered, but was afterwards found hid under the carpet. The third and last question was, "why did you do it," to which he only answered, " I had a cause."

Coroner Wright, of this town, was summoned and held and inquest shortly after noon, rendering a verdict of death by his own hand. The uniform testimony of the eighteen jurymen was that they had never seen so bloody and revolting a sight as the scene of the suicide presented.

The deceased was 30 years old, a finely built man, in vigorous health, weighing about 200 pounds, a quiet, good tempered man, clever and accommodating and popular with the patrons of the house. No one, perhaps, feels more keenly his loss than Mr. Cavin his employer. He grew up in the vicinity of Kenton, and is the eldest son of Stephen Minner.

There are very naturally speculations and surmised as to what should prompt him to thus take his own life. So far as we can learn, the settled opinion about Kenton is that there was "a woman in the case," the details of which need not be brought in the narrative of the tragic event. There is evidence also that he brooded over, instead of throwing off the trouble, until his mind became morbid, and he thus became his greatest enemy. It was the weight of this mental depression that caused him to plot against his own life and carry it into execution, as on the Wednesday before he had asked a friend while riding in a carriage if he ever had trouble, receiving in answer, certainly, that every man had trouble, the deceased simply replying, " well, I want you all to come to my funeral." The conversation ended there and the friend thinking it a playful remark, thought nothing more of it until he heard of the suicide. The remains were interred today in Bryn Zion cemetery."
