[9762] in his early days he was a miller at Bollinger's Mill between Hanover and Littlestown. At first they lived in Littlestown where he was a butcher, miller, and was a member of the town council in 1878. Later they moved to Gettsburg where around 1884 he was elected as Democratic Register of Wills and Recorder of Deeds for Adams Co. Athough he was a staunch Democrat from the time he cast his first vote, he was elected and reelected to these offices with the support even of the dominant Republican Party who allowed him to run without opposition- a marked tribute to his popularity. He also served as Assistant Supt of the Gettysburg National Military Park frrom 1894-1920. israel was one of five brother who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He had helped to organize two companies of infantry at the outbreak of the war recruiting men mainly from Franklin, Hamilton, and Reading townships in Adams Co . He himself served as a 1st Lieutenant in Co D 165 PA Inf. for nine months, being stationed much of the time at Suffolk VA..
