RUNK ARTICLE
William H Voshell was a pupil in the public schools of his native hundred. Until he was eighteen years old he remained on the farm at home, after which he spent three years in learning flour milling with John Henson. When he had completed his apprenticeship he worked as a journeyman for John Drummond, near Middletown, New Castle Co. After a short time he moved to the Spring mills in St. George's hundred and was manager there for Charles T. Smith for nine years, renting the mills for a short time. He removed to the Dover mill for eighteen months, but in 1886 returned and purchased the Spring mills for $5,500. In the past twelve years he has expended more than $6,000 in improvements, re-equipping the mills with roller machinery and enlarging their capacity. He has also built a handsome and comfortable dwelling house near the mills. In 1897 Mr. Voshell leased the brick mills, St George's hundred, and operates these in connection with the Spring mills. He is the only miller in his hundred and has increased the business of his mills greatly by his thorough knowledge of his trade and his industry and enterprise. He is a good citizen, whose worth is appreciated by his fellows. He is a member of Odessa Conclave, I. O. H. and was, at one time, an Odd Fellow. He has been inspector of elections and is a school commissioner. He is a Democrat.
In April, 1882, William H. Voshell married, in St George's hundred, Sarah C., daughter of Thomas and Martha (Morris) Moore, who was born in Sussex Co. They have three children (entered as data). Mr. Voshell and family are members of the M.E. church. Mr.Voshell is one of the stewards of the congregation and a teacher and was at one time superintendent of the Sabbath school. (Book published in 1899)
He is the brother of Ezekiel. There is some tie in here with the widow of Ezekiel marring a David Rees and the operating the mills at Willow Grove in Middletown. Spring mill is just north of Odessa and the Drummond mills were on Noxonton Lake. Willow Grove shows up on the map in 1881 own by a Fenimore.
1887/April 27 "W. H. Voshell, at Smith's Mills, is refitting his mills with rollers and will make the fine white flour produced by this new process and which is so noted and so much sought after. He will have the improvements completed by about May 1st." MT T
1887/Dec 15. "Mr. Wm. Voshell of Smiths Mill, had a horse taken suddenly ill while attached to his mill wagon in town on Monday. A veterinary surgeon came down from Wilmington on Monday evening and after doctoring it awhile, it was afforded some relief. The disease was pronounced to be an affection of the kidneys. It was removed out to the mill on Tuesday." MT T
1892/June 10. "W.H. Voshell, of St. Georges Hundred, the possessor of a wonderful double-bodied, eight-legged pig with but one head. The animal soon died. Druggist John Baker, of Odessa, has placed it in alcohol." MT T
1893/Jan 21. "W. H. Voshell whose reputation a miller is second to none, was in town Thursday." MT T
1895/Nov 2:"Mr. Voshell was in Wilmington Saturday." MT T
1896/Oct 31 " In vicinity of Odessa has been the unfortunate victim of two visitation of fire within the past few days. On Monday afternoon, fire was discovered in the dwelling house of Mr. W. H. Voshell, near Odessa. Every effort was made to check the progress of the flames but to no purpose. A portion of the household effects were saved but the house is a complete ruin. The loss is fully covered by insurance and Mr. Voshell will rebuild on the same site." MT T
1897 Oct 30 " Mr. W. H. Voshell proprietor of the McDonough Mills makes announcement through the Transcript's advertising columns that he had leased the Brick Mills near town where he will crush feed & c. He has established at this place a flour in exchange for their wheat without the trouble of waiting. He asks a share of the public patronage." MT T
1906/June 2 " Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Voshell, of Brick Mills, entertained the following friends and relatives on Decoration Day: Mrs. Thomas Bills, of Atlantic City, NJ., Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Moore and daughter, of Philadelphia, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Robinson and son, Mrs. James Edwards, Mr and Mrs. J. H Moore and two sons of Wilmington." MT T
Steven Voshell Notes;
Miller/Carpenter, died of cerebral Apoplex at Jas W. M Hospital. Death certificate states that father's name was a J W Voshell. This is probably a mistake.
His obituary states: He came to live in Wilmington in July 1913 and had resided there since that time, survived by is wife, and three children- R. D. Voshell of Washington DC, W. M. Voshell of Baltimore, and Miss Martha M Voshell , office secretary of the YMCA at Wilmington
Conrad History of Delaware (1908) mentions that William H Voshell now owned the Old Murphy Mill with is located in Bohemia Manor. According to the Runk article on the Cochran family, this mill is just west of Middletown about 5 miles. The map of 1871 of Cecil Co show Bohemia Mills owned by a T. C. Murphy on the Great Bohemia River.
In the 1914 DE Directory there is a listing for a "Voshell W H Mills Middletown." The family lived at Grove Mills Silver Lake when JWV JR was young for about 14 years.
