[12664] Came to America on the Ship patience on Sept 19, 1749 with Johannes Steinseifer may have been his uncle. The official ship list indicated that he was very ill, and thus an official wrote down his name as Johan Ebert Stein- however, in America he was alsays known as Johannes Eberhardt Steinseifer.

As indicated, Johannes Eberhardt was quite possible a half-brother of John Daniel Stonesifer through an earlier marriage of the father. He accompanied his uncle, Johannes, west to the Hoffman place at Holz-Schwamm, but he then stayed behind with the Hoffmans instead of going on with him to settle in VA. It seems that he continued to stay in that area for some little while as on Dec 2, 1750 he was recorded by Rev. Jacob Lischy as being the sponsor at the baptism of twins of the Hoffman couple. By this time he had married, and quite possibly to a daughter of the Hoffman's named Anna Maria. On Feb 10, 1751 the Rev Jacob Lischy recorded that Johannes Eberhardt and Anna Maria Steinseifer had a daughter baptized by the name of Anna Catharine- the same name as Mrs. Hoffman, an for the occasion Johannes and Anna Catharine Hoffman were the sponsors.

Weather Johannes Eberhardt and his family continued to live in the vicinity of the Hoffmans or resettled in the Silver Run - Union town area of MD in the following year cannot be determined. But it appears likely that he was in touch with our John Daniel Stonesifer who arrived in Philadelphia on Sept 22, 1752 and in a short time was living near him. On Nov 4, 1753 the Rev Jacob Lischy has recorded that Johannes Eberhardt and Anna Maria Steinseifer had a son baptized by the name of John Daniel and our John Daniel Stonesifer and the girl he was to shortly marry Anna Maria Sterner were the sponsors. It is possible that our John Daniel of Silver Run lived in the Holz-Schwamm area for a short time, and that this baptism occurred there. More likely, however, the parties concerned were living in the area of Silver Run- Uniontown. Be that as it may, this all would seem to strongly indicate a family relationship between the Hoffman couple, Johannes Eberhardt and our John Daniel of Silver Run.

On Dec. 2,1750 the Hoffman couple had two children baptized by a traveling German Reformed pastor, Rev. Jacob Lischy. The children who were twins were named John Eberhardt and Maria Magdalena and the recently arrived from Germany John Eberhardt was the sponsor (witness) for the occasion. A little over town months later Johannes Eberhardt and Anna Maria (Hoffman?) Stonesifer had a little daughter who they named Anna Catharine. This child was baptized by Rev Jacob Lischy on Feb 10 1781 and Johannes Wilhelm and Anna Catharina Hoffman were the sponsors for the event.

During this time it appears that either Johannes Eberhardt or one of the sisters had written to John Daniel Stonesifer back in Germany and urged him to join them in America. At any rate this is what he did, landing in Philadelphia on Sept 22 1752 and in a very short time he had come to the Holz-Schwamm area also. His coming there directly was obviously due to previous knowledge, which must have been supplied as indicated. On Sept 7 1748 and Erhart and Maria Eve Bomgardner (Baumgardner) came to America and settled in the Silver Run-Uniontown area. Then on Aug 30 1749 (and about 3 weeks prior to Johannes Eberhardt's arrival) a Martin and Anna Margaret Study also arrived, and in due time also settled near Silver Run. Later events tend to make the writer (Doyle F Wildasin) believe that Maria Eve and Anna Margaret were possibly sisters to Johannes Eberhardt and John Daniel. One can hardly help believing that both men knew exactly where they were going for a destination. That they did not choose to settle down in any of the numerous German neighborhoods or villages in and around Philadelphia, or go north of the city to the areas of Allentown, Bethlehem and Reading where many Germans were settling, but instead chose to come west through the heavily German Settlements developing around Lancaster and York and come to the relatively remote areas of Holz-Schwamm, and then Silver Run and Uniontown MD would seemingly have to be due to prior information that they had been given. After living in the York Co PA area of Holz-Schwamm for a time it appears now the Johannes Eberhardt and John Daniel then moved on and resettled in the Silver Run area about 1753-1754.

On Nov. 4 1753 the Rev. Jacob Lischy baptized a recently born son of Johannes Eberhardt and Anna Maria Steinseiffer named John Daniel. His exact date of birth is not known, but he obviously was named for John Daniel Stonesifer who was presumably the baby's uncle. The sponsors for the occasion were John Daniel Stonesifer and Anna Maria Sterner. (The sponsor, John Daniel Stonesifer, is he who arrived in America on Sept 22, 1752 and Anna Maria is the girl he married soon afterwards. We specify this information because previous family researchers seem to have mistaken these 2 John Daniels as one and the same person.).

About 1757 Johannes Eberhardt and Ann Maria Stonesifer had a daughter named Elizabeth Gertrude. While her actual birth or baptism dates have not been found, her existence is known by her being a baptism sponsor several years later.

Three years later Johannes Eberhardt and his wife Anna Maria again had a daughter, Catharina Elizabeth who was baptized by Rev Lischy on July 27, 1769. The sponsors for the event were Lorentz and Catharina Elisabeth Schweissguth who came to Philadelphia from Germany on the Ship Edinburg on Sept 16 1751. Reader and writer alike may wonder if there was any relationship in this case, also.

Nothing further is presently known of the family for some years. It appears that Johannes Eberhardt's wife Anna Maria died about 1769 and that he then married a much younger girl named Margretha whose last name may have been Zimmerman. If so, she was a daughter of Jost (later spelled Yost) Zimmerman and his wife Anna Catharina, who came to America on Sept 19 1749 on the Ship Patience with our Johannes Eberhardt and his uncle Johannes Steinseifer.

About 1770-71 Johannes Stonesifer and Jost Zimmerman moved to the vicinity of Hagerstown, MD. At the time this area was still a part of Frederick Co but on Sept 6 1776 it became Washington Co with the county seat located at Hagerstown a town which had been laid out in 1762.

Around the time that Johannes Eberhardt arrived there, the First German Reformed Church of Hagerstown was established, and his name, given as "Johannes Steinscyfer", is listed as being among the members of the founding congregation. The early record of the church mention that Johannes and Margretha Steinseifer had had a little girl named Elizabeth born on Dec 12 1772 and who was baptized on Mar 2 1773 with the baby's sister, Elisabeth Gertraut (Gertrude ) as the sponsor. Then, although no church record can be found, a son Henry was apparently born about 1774. A few years later the same church records do mention that Johannes and his wife Margretha had a girl named Anna Maria who was born Apr 13 1776 and was baptized Apr 20 of the same year.

On Aug 7 1777 Johannes Stonesifer purchased a half lot in Elizabeth Town Washington Co MD for a John Leidy for 174 pounds and which is recorded in Deed book A page 42. Thus Johannes was one of the first persons of the newly created county to purchase land. Later this same lot was sold by him on Nov 23, 1789 to a John Davis and from that point it appears he no longer owned any land.

Sometime about 1778 Johannes and Margretha Stonesifer had the last addition to their family with a girl named Christina. No specific dates have yet been found.

The 1st Census of the United States in 1790 lists him as John Stonesifer and who is living in Washington Co MD with 1 male child under the age of 16 years and 7 white females in his family. The same census tells us that his older son, John Daniel (born in 1753 near Uniontown in Frederick Co) is married and living in his own home. The census figures indications are exactly that information which should appear. It should also be mentioned that while the writer (Doyle F Wildasin) had on occasion mentioned Johannes as John, his correct name and the one he seems to have used and written was Johannes. Once in awhile, the name John has appeared in connection with him, but as in the 1790 census, it apparently was someone other then Johannes who was Anglicizing his name. The 1790 Census also lists Jost (Yost) Zimmerman and family as residents of Washington Co MD.

The next time there is anything recorded of Johannes is in the Census of 1800. Here it indicates that his wife is deceased, and that he and his son, Henry are living with the older son, John Daniel and his wife, and presumably in Boonsboro, MD. Whether Elizabeth Town (or Elizabethtown) where Johannes had lived became Boonsboro or simply ceased to exist is not known.

No further records of any kind have presently been found pertaining to Johannes Eberhardt Stonesifer, and as he is not listed in the 1810 Census not indicated as far as can be determined at this time, we must conclude that he died sometime between 1801-1810 aged 80 or more. Neither his occupation nor place of burial are presently known.

Apparently Johannes Eberhardt's first wife Anna Maria Hoffman died around 1769 as he shortly afterwards was married to Margaret Zimmerman moved to the Hagerstown - Boonsboro area of Frederick Co MD about 1771. Later that area became part of Washington Co MD. There he owned land, was one of the founding members of First Reformed Church in Hagerstown, and signed his name at various times as Johannes Steinseifer. He is believed to have had 8 children.

Johannes Eberhardt Steinseifer died sometime between 1801-1810 and was likely buried in Boonsboro. He is the immigrant ancestor of all those Stonesifer who originated from the Boonsboro area of MD. Although his last name is spelled as Steinseifer, the writer (Doyle F Wildasin) has found occasion where he is indicated as the now familiar spelling of Stonesifer. It seems that his son John Daniel was the one who changed the local way of spelling it to the form we are familiar with today.
