[13354] Robert Palmatary Book: James Palmatary, son of Robert Palmatary, was born an a farm in Duck Creek HD Kent Co DE. His father died when James was about 10 years old and not long after, his mother married Benjamin Vanwinkle, who took over the job of raising James and his brothers.

James married a local girl, Sarah, whose maiden name is not known. They had twelve children, five of whom died young. Jane, James, John, Martha, and Jackson were all buried on Matt Ford's farm. [ the area at the end of Gravesend road is the location of a old cemetery on the 1850's Duck Creek map. The area is basically a junk heap for the home now occupied on the corner.]

1811, May 13 M2 169 James and wife Sarah, along with his brothers, John and his wife Elizabeth, and William (NC Co.) and Deborah his wife, sold a tract of land containing 133 acres, 85 perches to Benjamin Vanwinkle. This tract probably belonged to their father, was passed to their mother when their father died, and was inherited by the three of them when she died.

In poor health James dictated his will three years before he died, declaring himself "sick and weak of body but of sound and disposing mind and memory." He was illiterate, making his mark rather than signing his name. It is interesting that he left two of his daughters Tamsey and Mary, one dollar each, yet left twenty dollars to each of the other two, Sarah Ann and Elizabeth Jane. Perhaps he felt the latter pair had a greater need for the money, as both of their husbands owed him money at the time of his death. James left his "beloved wife Sarah" one-third of his estate and , after the girls were paid the aforesaid amounts, his three sons, Rover, Daniel and William were to split the balance.

James' inventory totaled $992.77. His livestock consisted of nineteen hogs, two sows, twelve pigs, four oxen, twenty-two sheep, and nine heads of cattle. His crops were wheat, corn, oats and flax.

James and Sarah's house had three bedrooms and a garret, with a total of seven beds. He was not a wealthy man, yet his inventory listed twenty-eight linen sheets, twenty blankets, nine bed quilts, five counterpanes and one overlid. This seems like a lot of bedding for their personal use, and raises the question whether some of it was made to sell. The sheets and quilts were valued at $1.00 each a, the blankets at $2.00 each, and the coverlid at 50 cents, but the counterpanes were valued at $5.00 a piece, making them a luxury items. Was James a weaver as well as a farmer?

James was buried on Matt Ford's farm, east of Smyrna, a private cemetery no longer in existence. Sarah then lived with her unmarried sons, Robert and Daniel. Son Robert died in 1854, Sarah in 1859, and both were buried on Matt Ford's Farm.
