[13385] Robert Palmatary Book: Robert Palmatary, son of Robert Palmatary, was three years old when his father staked out a claim to 500 acres of land on Duck Creek in what is now Kent Co DE. Where he was born or where his parents came from is not known. Three years later, William Penn granted the land to Robert's father, who named it "Robert's Chance."

Robert spent his whole life on this land, at first just watching and later helping his father clear the land and farm it.

At sixteen, Robert was the oldest of four when his father died, and the burden of helping his mother run the farm fell to him. He married another pioneer's daughter, Elizabeth whose maiden name may have been Greenwood. Together they raised six children in the wilderness, far from stores, schools, and doctors.

In spite of his rugged life, Robert lived to age seventy-two and died possessed of land, a house, livestock, and a personal estate valued at fifty-nine pounds sterling. Most of what is known about Robert comes from his will, written two weeks before he died, by and unknown scribe. Robert was illiterate and made his mark, "P," in lieu of signing his name. A copy of his will, exactly as written is on the following page.

Robert left his share of the land he had inherited from his father to his wife and at her death to be equally divided between his three sons. He specified they were not to sell it except to each other.
