[13394] Robert Palmatary Book: "Robert Palmatary of Duck Creek HD is the earliest Palmatary on record in Delaware State Archives. On 6 Jan 1680 a tract of land was surveyed for him on a warrant from Hoornkill (Lewes) Court. This tract, containing five hundred acres, was located on the south side of Duck Creek in what is now Kent co, and he named it , "Robert's Chance."

A month later, on 4 Feb 1680 Robert made his mark, "R'" on a taxpayers' petition to have the county seat moved "to a more convenient location." Hoornkill was approximately fifty miles from Robert's land.

In March of 1682, Robert was one of thirty-four settlers to obtain a warrant from the St. Jones (Kent) County Court, provided he settle on an improve his claim within one year of the survey. The court ordered the survey in June and it was done in December. On 26 Mar 1684, Robert was granted his five hundred acres by William Penn for a quitrent of one bushel of wheat per hundred acres per year. Sometime later, Robert obtained and adjoining tract of two hundred nine acres, called "Golden Grove."

The names and birth dates of Robert and Janna's children are on record in the Delaware State Archives, copied years ago from and unknown source.

A copy of Robert's will was made evidently when the original was in a state of deterioration and the date already obliterated. However, a later document concerning his land stated that date of his will as 20 Nov 1691. He may not have died on that date, as one early census record lists him in 1693 in both Duck Creek hundred and Little Creek Hundred.

At the time Robert dictated his will, he owned, in addition to "Robert's Chance," a four hundred acre tract of land called "Newberry." He gave his wife, Joanna, permission to sell it after his death, to support herself and the children. Robert had already sold "Golden Grove." "Robert's Chance" was to be equally divided between the four children after Janna's death. By 1697, Joanna was married to Thomas Sharp and together they.

Where did Robert Palmatary come from? On or before 27 Jan 1679, he was one of eight persons transported from the Colony of Virginia to the Province of Maryland. A year later, he applied for a land grant in St Jones County, present-day Kent Co DE. When and where he married Joanna, or where their first child was born is not known. How he got to Virginia and what county he came form may never be known.

What is certain is that Robert did stake out a claim in the wilderness that would one day become the State of Delaware. There is no doubt that he was a man of courage and physically strong enough to clear his land build a house, provide for his family and start a dynasty of Palmatary
