[Rin I8664] [12688] [12689] Family 1:

Elizabeth HOFFHEINTZ

  1.  John STEINSEIFER
  2.  George STEINSEIFER
  3.  Jacob STEINSEIFER
  4. +George Washington STONESIPHER
  5.  Henrich STEINSEIFER
  6.  Adam STEINSEIFER

[12688] He sailed for America on board a British ship from Rotterdam in 1767. He was with his parents, a 13-year-old sister, and a 2-year-old brother whose names are not known. During the voyage the parents died and were buried at sea, and the ship captain kicked the 2-year-old son to death, reportedly, for crying. Henry (as he later became) and his sister landed in New York in October of 1767 and were sold as indentured servants for money - even though the whole family's passage had been previously paid. Around that time in America, the term of servitude was an average of seven years.

Henry appeared in York Co PA about 1780. In the Pennsylvania Archives, 6th Series, Vol. 2 are the muster rolls relating to the York County militia for the Revolutionary War. For the period starting about Oct 7, 1780. It is recorded that Henry Stonesifer was a Private, 1st class, in the 3rd Co, 5th Battalion as of Dec. 27,1782.

In the records of the First Reformed Church of York PA it states that a "Heinrich Steinseiffer" married Elizabeth Hoffheintz on Oct. 21, 1783. The Hoffheintz family was located near Abbottstown, PA (6 miles north of Hanover) and numerous members of that family are buried in the old Emanuel Reformed Church cemetery there. Today the name is spelled Hoffheins.

On Mar. 15 1788 (and recorded in the courthouse in York on Dec.3 1791) "Henry Steinsiffert" of Paradise twp. purchased 455 and 3.4 acres of land in nearby Codorus twp. from Valentine and Catharina Alde for 161 pounds. Thus we again have proof of another Stonesifer who came to the Hoffman family area of the Holz-Schwamm region of Paradise twp., York PA. Henry and others nearby purchased a piece of land on Apr. 26 1793 from the Lau family for 10 shillings in Codorus twp. as a school property. Then on Aug 11, 1794 Henry sold to Valentine Bergheimer and wife his property in Codorus twp for 225 pounds. This transaction is recorded in York Deed Book 2K page 103. In all his legal transactions, Henry had signed his name, thus showing us that he too could write. Bergheimer, a cordwainer, actually got only 44 acres, the deed book states, as some years before 1 and 3/4 acres had been accidentally added which really were part of another property. The new owners of Henry's property was the same Valentin Bergheimer who with his wife Maria Jacobina, had been sponsor at the baptism of Anna Maria daughter of John Daniel Stonesifer at Silver Run on June 7, 1761.

Descendants of Henry and Elizabeth Hoffheintz Stonesifer understand that the couple left York Co. around 1800 and resettled in Jefferson Co., Kentucky. As there is nothing further recorded in York Co for them after they sold their property in Codorus twp. on Aug 11, 1794 it is logical to assume that it was actually 1794 when they went to Kentucky. After living in Kentucky for some time, the family moved across the Ohio River to Clark Co., Indiana where they spent their last years. Their descendants anglicized the name eventually to Stonecipher.

Henry and Elizabeth Stonesifer are said to have had a family of 6 boys and 5 girls. During the time that they lived in York Co., PA the following children were recorded as having been born to them John, George (both recorded at Emanuel Reformed Church in Abbottstown), Jacob (recorded at St Paul's (Wolf's )Church in West Manchester twp.), George (recorded at St Peter's (Lischy's) Church near Spring Grove several miles east of Hanover, and who may have had a second name as Henry but it is not stated), Henrich and Adam (both recorded at St Paul's (Wolf's Church in West Manchester Twp some miles east of Spring Grove). The names of the five daughter are not known to the writer. (Doyle F Wildasin)
