Turner file letter date Nov 4 1902 from Felton Del.:
"My dear sir; your letter of 28th of Oct recd byt I was in Phila at the time and have been best pering an answer day by day.
I have no record of our family particularly but I have one of the diaries or journals sa he called it Dr Nathaniel Luff. The back part of the books the genealogical acct is unfortunately torn off. He belonged to our family or we to his as we are the only Luff family in the state or ever was here. He says Hugh Luff came from England the latter part of seventeenth or beginning of eighteenth century, and took up land from the original proprietor, William Penn, or his heirs, on the western shore of the Delaware bay. He had tow sons, Nathaniel and Caleb.
These two latter names have gone down the whole family, as my father who died last fall was named Nathaniel, and I have an Uncle living here named, Caleb. Their father, my grandfather was also named ,Nathaniel, and his father was named, Caleb.
Part of the land taken up by Hugh Luff, I supposed, I now own, as my father left two farms in Milford neck, east of Frederica, that his father owned, and his father before him, going from father to son until I own it. There are a lot of graves on the Luff family on a farm adjoining our land, and this has been in our possession for over 200 years. My ancestors owned nearly all the land in that neck for three miles or more as you approach the Delaware Bay
This Doctor Nathaniel Luff, was a surgeon in the Revolutionary army and was encamped at Morristown, NJ with Washington, as he speaks in the journals of amputating the arm of a soldier wounded in one of the battles fought a that soil, while in camp there.
He was a Quaker or Friend and spent a good bit of his time running all over the peninsula attending meetings, and was, I think from what I gleam from his books of rather erratic mind and whimsical. I so not think he was satisfied long in one place, but was of roving nature. He practiced medicine in Wilmington and also Frederica, but I do not know when, or where else. He was born in 1756, April 23 in Jones Neck, Kent Co , Province of Penna. So his book says. He was the father of Garrett Luff, who once kept store in Camden Del and my Uncle here in Felton, Caleb L Luff clerked for him.
My father's father, Nathaniel Luff, had a brother named Hugh.
I cannot tell you who Mary Luff was, that married John Marium.
Dr. Nathaniel Luff, was Rev P C Warrens grandfather, Pastor of Washington St ME Church Poughkeepsie NY.
I and related through the Luff; and Beswicks, my father's mother's name is about all the old families of Frederica. The old families are all married into one another. My family for over 200 years having lived in that neighborhood.
