born near Union Mills in Carroll Co MD Tommy as he was often called started a career in the field of public education that began in 1877 when he was 19 years old, and continued until his retirement from active life on June 30 1929. His teaching carreer began with two years in Union Twp in Adams Co then 14 years at Mt Pleasant and 5 years at Sand Hill. Both schools being in Conewago twp in Adams Co. The rest of his teaching years were spent at the Pennville school just west of the Hanover Boro Line and located on the Hanover-Littlestown Rd.
In Nov of 1915 he was elected a school director for Hanover and served a 6 year term. In July of 1916 he was chosen secretary of the Hanover Public School Board, but he continued to teach until Nov 1 1923 when he as again chosen secretary of the school board. In that capacity he also served as truant officer and business manager- a post he held until June 30 1929 when he retired.
For many years he had lived on Frederick St not too distant from where he taught. Later he lived at 11 East Middle St in Hanover- the home where his parents had lived. he was a member of St Matthew's Lutheran Ch. was a teacher of the Men's Bible Class there for some years, and had one child from his first marriage. The picture of him that accompanied his obituary in the Hanover Evening Sun at the time of his death portrayed a very distinguished man who had led a very distinguished life. He was 87 when he died.
