Absolutely! And how beautifully put, "made us different people."
This is the kinship aspect that I try so hard to impart. People who were
important to our ancestors weren't always blood relations. In colonial
times references to "my son or daughter" often meant my son-in-law or my
daughter-in-law rather than a blood child. It is interesting that often no
distinction was made between kinship relatives. It is a real definition of
kinship. In deeds in Cecil County, Maryland Otho Othoson gave plantations
to his "grandsons" William and Otho Pennington, sons of Richard Pennington.
This puzzled us for years because we could not connect Otho as a parent of
Richard Pennington or Mary Wheeler, his wife. What Marilyn Freeland figured
out from a probate record was that Otho had married Elizabeth, the widow of
John Wheeler. John Wheeler was Mary Wheeler's parent. Otho became a
grandparent by marring a Grandma.
Another factor to take into consideration is multiple marriages. It
is facile to assume a maiden-name -- as has been done with Robert
Pennington's will (Cecil County 1709) mentioning his "brother-in-law"
Robert Porter. Robert Pennington's wife has been ascribed as Ann Porter
from this mention. I don't think so, I think her mother was married several
times and Robert Porter was a half-brother. But I haven't proved this yet.
Thank you so much for your comments, Corrine.
Love, Your Cousin, Carolyn
