notes from Merle Price: PP 24/1/1992
"A William Pennington is in the records of the Cecil-Kent Friends, Duck Creek Meeting of 11/11/1809. He was recommended for membership but denied because he was a minor. Later, about Sept, 1812 he was apparently approved, but no further mention of his name appears. From thse dates, a bith date of 1788 to 1791 may be suggested for the William Pennington in the Quaker records.
In Johnston's "History of Cecil County," a William Pennington is listed among the names of soldiers attending Fort Defiance, 4/29 to 5/24/1813. His record was obtained from the national Archives. William Pennington was assigned to the 49th Reg't (Veasey's) of the MD Militia with the rank of "Private" in Capt. Williamson's Co of Infantry. He served 5 days May 3 to may 8.1813, for which he was allotted $33 1/3. It is of particular interest to note that Joshua Hyland signed the receipt for payment 8/14/1813 at Easton, Md., William having been discharged at Baltimore on 5/8/1813. There seems little doubt that Pvt. William Pennington was the husband of Amelia (Hyland) Pennington and bro-in-law of Joshua Hyland at the time of this military service in the war of 1812.
In the US Census of 1820, William Pennington appears in the 2nd District of Cecil Co. His age gives a birth date of 1775-1794. There were two females; the older, presumably his wife Amelia, b 1775-1794, and their dau Sarah Jane, with a given birth date of 1810-1820. In the US Census of 1830, Amelia Pennington appears in 2nd dist. of CC as the head of a household, Her birth date is given as 1780-1790, and that of the other female as 1815-1820. No Males appear in the listing so we may presume that William Pennington is deceased by 1830 and that Amelia (Hyland) Pennington is left with their daughter, Sarah Jane Pennington."
