Author: Ruth Jones
I descend from Alice Voschal, wife of Samuel Thorrington. Alice was born abt 1785 in Delaware and resided in Dearborn County from 1815-1831 (was in 1830 census, Logan Township). She died near Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co., IN before 1850. I believe her to be the daughter of William and Mary Voshell of Dover, Kent Co., Delaware.

Dear Ruth,

I'll work backwards in time for this exercise proof that Alice, widow of Titus Voshell is connected to your Samuel Thorrington.

DE Archives RG 1225 Kent County Chancery Court Partition Feb 1841 Lands of Obadiah Voshell: In this file there is one document from the State of Indiana, Dearborn County dated December 1825. It appears to be an affidavit giving her sons power of attorney:

" Know all men by these presents that I Aley Thornton formerly Aley Voshell of the County of Dearborn a & State of Indiana for divers good cause and consideration me hereunto moving have made ordained authorized and appointed and by these presents do make ordain authorize and appoint my son Obediah Voshell (Matthias is crossed out and Obediah written over top) Voshell of the County of Dearborn & State of Indiana my true and lawful attorney for me and in my name and for my own proper use and benefit to ask demand sue for and recover and receive of and from all persons who so ever in the county of Kent & State of Delaware moneys or property belonging to or due me from my deceased Husband Titus Voshell estate or from other persons any debts due or demands owing to me the said Aley Thornton late Aley Voshell and to have" etc.

The back of the document has the date 1825 Witnessed Isaac Morgan , Samuel Thorington ( his signature) and signed by "Aley Thornton" her mark "X"

Another doument in this same file is a petition filed by representatives of Obediah and Matthias Voshell Feb 18 1841. It appears that these two heirs claim they were not notified of the estate settlement of Obediah Voshell decd. (This is probably in reference to the settlement of June 4, 1834, more on this later) It is signed by Matthias Voshell, Obadiah Voshell, Alecy Thorington by Obadiah Voshell her attorney in fact.

In another document, the surviving heirs are named in detail. In this section: "4th Titus Voshell who has since departed this life intestate, living to survive him (^ point above the line 'a widow now Aley Thorington and') two sons viz. Matthias Voshell and Obediah Voshell his only children and heirs at law" dated 23 Sept 1844

Obadiah Voshal left a will dated 21 April 1796. He names his son Titus and his wife Hannah to care for the younger children. (Hannah was the daughter of Timothy and Penelope (Freeman) Irons. Penelope's brother was Titus Irons who died without children. Hannah inherited her brother's land. This is probably where the Titus name hails from.

When Hannah (Irons) Voshell dies in 1830, Titus is already dead, leaving his share of the inheritance to his sons Matthias and Obadiah Voshell whom had moved to Indiana. In the rather large file in the Orphan Court, there is a paper that requires William Voshall, Matthias Voshall and Obadiah Voshall who reside in the State of Indiana to appear at the next orphans court 6 Oct 1834. The court also required a notice be published in the national newspaper to notify these heirs. I can not find that piece but I remember it, I look for it is you like.

In the DE Archive Marriage Card File, there is only one Alice Voshell and she married Samuel Thorrington on 11/24/1804. There is only one Titus Voshell and he married Alice Bailey on 9/2/1799.

These marriages seem to fit with all the rest of the information. Titus marriage was after his father's death in 1796. Five years in between the first and second marriage for Alice to have given birth to two Voshell children. Then 25 years that the widow Hannah lived, for her grandsons, Matthias and Obediah to get lost in the inheritance shuffle.

I have not researched the Bailey surname. However, the DE Archives has a searchable probate file on line. You might get lucky with just a few Baileys from that era to get a connection.

The archivists at DE can look up those two marriage cards for Alice and Titus. There are the important sources on the card that I did not copy for my purposes since this is not a direct line. They will photo copy the actual reference. Alice Bailey marriage reference may have her parent's name but it is not likely.

Additional Titus Voshell information but the dates so not seem to correspond to your connections.

Census data from DE
1850 Titus Voshell age 10 M living with James Wilkenson 47 Wheelwright
living with Edward Hubbard farmer
1860 Titus Voshell 19 M Lab DE lives with Edward Hubbard 34 Farmer
1870 Titus Voshell age 29 M MD wife Unity 27, Ida 3, Code 11/12
This appears to be the same individual and the only other Titus Voshell I have seen in the records. Unfortunately, I have been unable to place him into a family group. The Voshells like all families have their favorite names and the MD birthplace is not much of a clue since the whole pod living within 3 miles of the state line.
