The First Ball Line
The surname Ball is of both baptismal and nickname origin. In the first sense, it denoted in its early usage "son of Baldwin," and was a diminutive form of that font-name. Secondarily, it signified a bald person, or one with bay-colored or chestnut hair, from the Old French, Balle meaning nut-brown.
Colonel William Ball, progenitor of this line in America, was born in England about 1615, and died at his plantation, "Millenbeck," on the Corotoman River in Lancaster County, Virginia, in November 1680. He came to Virginia from England about 1650 bringing his wife and three children. He was a burgess in the Virginia Assembly, September 17, 1668, October 3,1670, September 20, 1671, September 24, 1672, October 20, 1673, September 21, 1674, and October 20, 1677. In March 1675/6 "Coll. William Ball and Lieut.-Coll. John Carter, or either of them in The county of Lancaster" were empowered by the Virginia Assembly to raise soldiers for the defense of the county against the Indians. His title of colonel at that time would indicate that he was county lieutenant or commander of the forces in active operation. For the transportation of his wife, children and other persons, Colonel Ball received sixteen hundred acres of land.
Colonel William Ball married in London, England July 2, 1638, Hannah Atherold, daughter of Thomas Atherold. Among their four children, the eldest surviving son was William.

William BALL was the father of Alling; Francis; John; Samuel; Richard;
Col. William (who went to VA) and Susanna, who married Thomas BALTCHLEY.
The source for this comes from DR. Joseph DRUSE in a letter to me dated
1981, from "Putman's Hist". Mag. Vol III p. 244
So (if all of this is correct), the rumor of a connection (though
distant) to Geo. WASHINGTON becomes fact. Col. William BALL (who went to
VA) was brother of Susanna BALL (who married Thomas BALTCHLEY), and he
was the great grandfather of Geo. WASHINGTON. The connection of course is
from Abigail BLATCHLEY, and not Edward.
