This is a transcription of the diary of young Franklin J.
Penington, my great grandfather. I have tried to copy it accurately even in the case
of his spelling errors. The diary was given to me by my cousin Frank Penington
Voshell Jr. Ruth Voshell Stonesifer 12/99.
Journal of Frank J Penington Commenced when he was 13 years 3 months 2 days old

Clear beautiful day blowed very hard in the evening and there
was a fire out of town a little piece supposed caused by the locomotive.

Clear and very cold I went skating on the pond but had very
dull time because the ice was not very strong.
Clear but very cold I had very nice time on the pond skating
and was very tired in the evening but I don’t care for that.
I woke this morning and to my great surprize I saw it had
been snowing. I was very sorry because I wanted to go skating.
Clear but very cold. I went to Sabbath School in the morning.
Brother Fred received a beautiful prize book from the Sabbath School.
I awoke this morning and to my great surprize it had been
snowing the snow was about three inches deep [half foot deep crossed out]. I went to
school today afterwards I got my sled out and had a jolly time.
Clear by very cold. There was a good many sleighs out today
but It was not very good Sleighing I went to school and afterwards I got my sled out.
Clear but not very cold I went to school today and afterwards
got my sled out and put our dog to it and trained him some. My father presented Fred with
a beautiful new sled.
It rained today and was very wet & disagreeable the
streets & roads were very bad you could not walk without getting in mud. I went to
school today and did not miss one of my lessons.
Very wet & slopy the streets & roads are still in a
bad condition. I went to school and missed my geography lesson but soon said it and went
home.
Clear and very pleasant. It froze a little during the night
but not very much the streets & roads are still very bad. I took a ride in the morning
to hunt for some pigs.
I went to Sabbath School this morning but my teacher was not
there and I did not say any lessons. I went and picked a book out and went home.
Clear and windy. It froze a little. I went to school and did
not miss one of my lessons. But was kept in an hour.
I awoke this morning and it was snowing. I was very glad
because I wanted to get my sled out to take the girls a riding. I went to school and did
not miss one of my lessons.
It rained nearly all day. I was very sorry because it washed
the snow away. There was a Railroad accident at the Canal bridge killed 8 men and wounded
some.
Clear and cold. I went to school and did not miss one of my
lessons. Afterwards I went to one of my schoolmates Fathers house and helped him mould
some bullets.
Clear in the morning but was not very clear in the afternoon.
I went to school today and missed one of my lessons. Then I came home and went to playing.
Rainy I did not go to school today because there was none. I
played nearly all day and helped about the house.
Still a raining. I did not go to Sabbath school today because
it was so mudy and was raining. I had to stay home and read all day most and I eat some
shell barks.
It rained nearly all day. I went to school today and missed
my Grammer lesson but soon said it and went home and went to drawing my map but did not
get it done.
When I awoke this morning it was haleing and I went to school
and had not been there long when it commenced snowing. One of my schoolmates got his head
cut very bad while playing with my brother Fred his name is Frank Eliason.
Clear today I went to school and missed my Grammer lesson.
When I got out I went to snow balling and I got hit in the temple but did not hurt much.
It snowed during the night.
I awoke this morning and [eat my breakfast and went to
school-crossed out]went to school and missed my Grammer lesson. I always miss it most.
It rained and hailed today. I went to school and in the
evening I went to hear a lecture and it was a very nice one It was very slidy when we was
going home.
I did not go to school today because there was none. I played
snake & checkers a good while and practised on my drum.
Very windy I went to Sunday school and I did no go church. I
stayed home and read all day.
I went to school and I missed my Geography lesson but I soon
said it and went home and went to playing.
It hailed today I went to school and did not miss one of my
lessons. I went home and got my brothers sled out and went to playing with it.
It rained today and was very wet and disagreeable. I went to
school and did not miss one of my lessons but was kept in a half an hour.

commenced to snowing. I was very glad because I wanted to have some fun with my sled. It

I went to school and missed one of my lessons there were a
good many sleighs out today I had fine time getting behind them with my sled

The Union troops captured fort Donelson and whe had and
ulumation here and had fire work to shoot of it look very pretty.

came up in the cars today and the band got out and played three or four tunes.

Damp misty day. Our Exhibition came of in the evening. I was
one of the actors in a piece called the turned head It set the audience in a rear of
laughter.
It rained all day today and in the evening it rained very
hard. I loafed around and plunged in mud nearly all day.
Clear today. I went to sabbath school and said my lesson and
came home. I did not go to church because I did not feel like it.
Cloudy and cold there was a slight sprinkle of snow. I went
to school and did not miss one of my lesson but was kept in a good while.

Clear beautiful day Garrett V. Cox a volunteer in the first
Delaware regiment died at Suffolk VA and was brought home for burrial to his famlies.

picked up a little while in the afternoon there it commenced to rain.
Clear beautiful day Garrett was buried today with Military
honor it was affecting at his funeral.
